UNIT HOOK: The hook for this unit will be to have students come into an untidy and overturned classroom with papers scattered everywhere, chairs tipped over, objects moved and misplaced. Have the students come into the reading area and as a group ask a number of questions:
What tasks need to be taken care of and what is the best way to distribute the workload among our class members?
What would be a fair way to share the cleaning tasks?
How can we decide this?
What jobs will need an adult?
What jobs can be done by students?
What areas will take more or fewer people to complete the cleaning task?
How should we share the jobs in the classroom?
What type of planning system can we used to ensure the jobs are shared equally?
Which people in the room are best suited for certain jobs and why?
Once the plan for fairly distributed jobs is complete, students and adults will put the classroom back in order. Then have a class discussion based on the following points:
How do you think the cleaning up went?
Why do you think the teacher had you do this activity?
From here, with the students, create a task sheet for the class that distributes daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks fairly among the students. This activity touches on indicator c) Identify those tasks necessary for the cleanliness of the classroom and school, and identifies the individuals who take primary responsibility for those tasks in the school.
